It was a dream come true for Joanna’s Therapeutic Massage downtown to open its doors in May 2024 in the Nashville, IN artist colony.
Owner Joanna Powers, LMT, spent years camping and teaching environmental education all over the US before settling in 2023 near her hometown of Bloomington, IN, to pursue her next adventure as a massage therapist.
“I graduated from the Ivy Tech Therapeutic massage program in July 2022 and feel as natural around the massage table as I do in the forest,” Joanna shares. “Creating the ideal massage for each client is like leading the perfect trip. Both take clear communication, knowledge, and flexibility to change the plan and flow with the client’s needs.”
Joanna has loved learning the intricacies of the body and is in awe of the benefits of massage.
“Working with each client to become more relaxed, in less pain, or able to move more freely is such a joy,” insists Joanna, who shares a home with her partner and their dog, Rusty. When she’s not working with clients or playing with her pup, she loves slow wanders in the woods, riding her paddleboard, creating tasty meals at home — and planning her next adventure.
Stay tuned for our Q&A with Joanna, who will share:

- Tell us about your journey to become an environmental educator and some of your adventures with your students.
- You shifted from education to massage therapy in 2022. What made you decide to change careers?
- You recently opened your own studio. What are your dreams, goals, and ambitions for your practice?
- Last but not least: What advice and insights do you have for those who want to break free and be an adventurer, too?
