August 2020: A Note from Hope — I can’t tell you how excited I am to introduce you to my dear friend — truly amazing woman Cynthia de Lorenzi. We met in 2004 when she launched her national women’s networking group in Washington, DC: Success In the City.
This petite powerhouse proudly hales from Texas and made the move to DC 16 years ago to open an office for the company she was running — PatriotNet, one of the earliest ISP tech companies to set up shop in the .com boom. Upon landing in the nation’s capitol, one of the first things she wanted to do was to make some good girlfriends.
“I wanted it so much that I made it my mission to find and connect with extraordinary women,” says the self-proclaimed Diva Extraordinaire who was so successful at gathering up amazing women that she created one of the largest networking groups in town.
In the years since, she has put her passion and savvy to work as chairman of Enable Women, and as an international motivational and TEDx Women speaker. These days, she also spends her time looking at some of the most marvelous sunsets in southern New Mexico where she works as a professional artist and photographer.
Cynthia’s long-time vision: “For Success in the City be a life-changing global business informational resource hub that helps to support women to enhance their own personal power and help them reach their goals — whatever they may be. We believe that through shared knowledge, experiences and resources women can build business economic strength and expand their opportunities for growth in every facet of their lives.”
The big reveal: That is why it is with great pride and gratitude I am thrilled to announce that Inkandescent Women is officially partnering with Cynthia and Success in the City to expand our reach and combine our network of 50,000+ friends and followers with her connection to 50,000 more.
We are on a mission: We are putting our hearts and business acumen together to give birth under the desert sky to oodles of opportunities for women around the world to connect, collaborate, learn from each other — and achieve their wildest dreams. Yes, we know this is a time of deep quarantine and, sadly, fear. But we’re embracing that reality and putting the deep emotions we all are feeling to work to help us all grow into the people we dream we can be. I put my money, and worldly belongings, where my mouth is in July when I relocated to New Mexico to be closer to Cynthia (I snapped the pic, right, on my 56th birthday on July 8 when Cynthia and I were taking a walk at sunset in her neighborhood.)
Here’s our plan: Much of what we’ll do for the time-being is by phone and Zoom — and that gives us the chance to regularly work with even more women who are also locked inside their homes around the country, and the world. In the coming months, be on the lookout for our educational workshops, webinars, virtual networking sessions, interviews and other useful resources to ensure every woman knows she is a powerhouse who can accomplish anything to which she sets her mind. Our Inkandescent Publishing Company is also ready to help more women write their books. And coming this fall we’ll be launching a Coaching page where seasoned life coaches will be available to help more women unblock whatever might be holding them back. Click here to join us!
What’s next? We begin August 2020 by offering insights from 8 women who are thought leaders in their industries. We asked them the question, “what’s next?” and you are going to love what they foresee. Be sure to check those out after you scroll down to hear what Cynthia believes is in store for us as women, as a nation, and as a global society. You’ll also find our 8 Steps to Harness Your Awesomeness: Today and every day, come what may.

What’s Next in your Life? Strap on those high heels, ladies. Here are thoughts and a to-do list to help gracefully guide you from chaos to the future of your dreams
By Cynthia de Lorenzi, CEO, Success in the City
I recently saw a quote from bestselling author and women’s advocate Glennon Doyle that read: “There are times for creating and times for becoming the person who will create the next thing.”
It struck me to my core and it got me thinking. Where am I, where are all of us, in this summer of 2020 — in our lives, our businesses, our soul work — and where we will go from here. There’s a tension to it, right? And sometimes a struggle, for if you are like me you are wrestling with an unknowable future and an ambition to find a place of centeredness and comfort when the last thing you feel is centered and comfortable.
For the first time in my life — and I’ve dealt with a lot of change — I am in jaw-dropping awe of how much, and how fast, the situation surrounding this COVID-19 pandemic. Daily, the reality of the situation seems to change, and so does how I feel and respond.
Clearly, this is a time of waiting, watching, managing frustrations and staying calm. And that is too often easier said than done. I have not painted in weeks. There’s work I want to do, but I find myself feeling stuck, almost apathetic. There’s a part of me that fears I’ll always feel this way.
And that is why I found solace in Glennon’s words. In the Twitter feed where I saw her quote, the bestselling author of Untamed admitted she had not written a word in weeks. That actually made me sigh with relief because it showed me that I am not alone. And if the woman who I’ve been admiring for ages feels uninspired, then I’m guessing there are lots of us out there looking for others to support us during these uncertain days.
This inspirational quote by Glennon also resonates with me: “You are not supposed to be happy all the time. Life hurts and it’s hard. Not because you’re doing it wrong, but because it hurts for everybody. Don’t avoid the pain. You need it. It’s meant for you. Be still with it; let it come, let it go, let it leave you with the fuel you’ll burn to get your work done on this earth.”
Here are some of the things that are giving me pause, causing me pain, : quarantine, conflicting advice from authorities I really want to trust, face masks, hand sanitizer, fear that the stranger I pass in a grocery store could infect me with a potentially deadly virus and that I bring it home to my husband who in a high-risk group. The list goes on, as does my daily dose of stress.
The good news? Have you ever noticed that in those moments of your life and career when what seems like the worst is happening — and in retrospect it turned out to be the best thing to happen along your journey? Think back on some of those times and situations, and remember what you did: You made a pivot and ultimately ended up in a better place. That’s what happened to me when I started painting (like the one on the right; more on that story later.) And that is where we all are today: on the precipice of an opportunity to be the best version of ourselves that we can possibly be. Today — which is truly all we ever have anyway. While it’s a daily practice to dismiss your worry — know that you can do take healthy steps to diminish it.
Here’s my suggestion: Use this time of chaos and change to prepare for the wonderful adventure coming next for you. And let’s do it together. Join Hope and I as we build this amazing program to help women everywhere. We’ve started by crafting a list 8 strategic steps you begin to put into place today. Scroll down for that information. Most of all, we both want you to know that you are not in this alone. Your sisters have your back, and together we will seize the day and turn this strange, uncharted time into a season of opportunity. — Cynthia

Ask yourself: What do I want, do I really, really want? Most humans crave certainty. It helps us navigate our day and our lives. When we are tossed into a new reality where the most we can be certain about is what we’ll do in the next 10 minutes, we have a grand opportunity to make changes and shifts that can ultimately make for a future. In chaos we can discover new opportunities for growth and life-defining change. What is the one truly amazing thing that I really want? Now stop. What just popped into your mind? Write it down. Then take a moment to catch your breath. How close are you to achieving that goal? It isn’t luck you need to accomplish your goals, according to Oprah, who insists: “I believe luck is preparation meeting opportunity. If you hadn’t been prepared when the opportunity came along, you wouldn’t have been lucky.”
2. Make a list. If your goal feels too far away and out of reach, make a list of the steps you need to take to get to it.
- Write down everything you want to do — be messy, scribble on a sheet in margins, use different colored markers, write down the craziest of ideas without editing yourself one bit.
- Now step back. Take a breath. Maybe take a day or two before looking at it again.
- When you come back to it, see your goals and big hairy dreams with fresh eyes. Now rework it in a more organized manner, but without judgment. If the thought: “Geez, that’s crazy — I can’t do that” pops into your mind, notice it, and let it go. Just start jotting down your ideas in a list that makes sense — with the big goal at the end, and what you think you need to do to get there, one step at a time.
- Ready to go even deeper? Grab a sheet of poster board, colorful markers, and maybe some magazines to build your vision board. This takes your list into the stratosphere because now you are really letting your imagination fly. Again, put the big goal on the right and work backward if you’d like to create timeline and path for how you might make your dream come to life. Other options are to flip through the magazines and find images that call to you. Set them down on the pasteboard collage-style and see what comes out. And, honestly, don’t be surprised if those dreams start coming to life in the coming weeks and months.
- The reason this works is because a vision board provides a subliminal visual message the create awareness when an opportunity that is aligned to your goals presents itself!
3. Find a mentor and/or become a mentor. Who out there among all the people you know is doing what you are dreaming of or just seems to always have great advice or insight? Who out there in the whole wide world might be an even better fit? Set your sights on finding that one person who will act as your mentor. Be clear, though. Make a list (clearly, we love these lists):
- What are your expectations of the relationship?
- Why do you want to tap their expert advice?
- Why do you feel you need them to be involved in your journey?
- It goes without saying: Be sure to let that person know that you will not only be grateful for them to be involved, thank them for sharing their expertise, knowledge, insight, and wisdom.
- Know this: When you teach you learn! Therefore becoming a mentor can help you uncover answers to your own questions and enlighten you on the path you wish to pursue!
4. Create your own advisory board. Now that you have some clarity around what you really, really want — write a book, start a business, redecorate your house, learn to play an instrument, to name a few — who would you like to help advise you? Who has been there, done that? This can be a group of your peers or other experts who admire and would like to replicate their success. Now bring that dream to life by crafting a letter inviting those folks to join you in your journey. Send it via email and invite them to Zoom with you. Start by inviting one advisor at a time until all of your questions are answered. In time, you might have the whole group come together for the next step: a mastermind group.
5. Pick members for a mastermind group and choose some topics you want to discuss. As you pivot in your life or career, begin thinking about how you’d like to set up a group that will come together to help each other work on one issue at time that you all have as a common challenge.
- Rules of the game: This is a no-competition zone. So there are members from the same industry, make sure that you are working to improve both of your businesses. Or, create a group that has only one member from each industry (as is done at BNI groups around the world).
- The goal: As it is with your advisory board, the mission of this group is to help you achieve your goals through accountability and collaboration.
- For example: If you want to write a book — find other people who want to do, too, so you can share processes, advice and knowledge that will be encouraging and keep you accountable. In fact, Inkandescent Publishing is launching a mastermind group this fall to accomplish just that. Click here to send us a note if you’d like to join us.
6. Read a couple of really helpful books. The next thing I like to do is stop and read a book — on self-improvement, business, a memoire, and fantasy … anything that will inspire you to think in new ways. Of course, Glennon’s Untamed is on our summer reading list. Another favorite by one of our featured Inkandescent Women is Shakti Leadership, by Nilima Bhat. There are countless others that we recommend by authors we’ve had the privilege of writing about. Not only are their stories impactful and educational, but research shows that reading for only six minutes can reduce your stress level, according to Dr. David Lewis, a neuropsychologist at Mindlab International in England. He explains: “It really doesn’t matter what book you read, by losing yourself in a thoroughly engrossing book you can escape from the worries of the everyday world and spend a while exploring the domain of the author’s imagination. This is more than merely a distraction but an active engaging of the imagination as the words on the printed page stimulate your creativity and cause you to enter what is essentially an altered state of consciousness.” So pick up a book!
7. Take a walk. Another great way to get your creative juices flowing and relieve some of the worry and stress you may be carrying, is to take a walk every day. It engages both sides of your brain — a fabulous way to stimulate thoughts and ideas. Research shows taking a regular walk improves self-perception and self-esteem, mood and sleep quality, and it reduces anxiety and fatigue. What’s more: Physically active people have up to a 30% reduced risk of becoming depressed and staying active helps those who are depressed recover. We both walk daily to keep our minds clear and walk together whenever we can — especially when we’re having brainstorming sessions.
8. Meditate. As you begin to make your move toward your incredible new life, they key is to stay grounded. Given that we are in the midst of a pandemic, that alone would be reason to find healthy way to keep calm in the chaos. One of the things Cynthia does daily is to meditate on everything she is grateful for — thinking about the people she loves and cares about, their remarkable presence in her life, and they gift each one brings to her no matter how big or small. Hope, a Kundalini and Yin-yoga teacher, practices daily using the power of the breath to find calm in any storm that shows up. This deep connection to the self is what we believe helps us find peace, no matter what is happening around us.
Power Up: We hope our 8 Tips help guide you as you find your place in the brave new world that stands before us.
